What This Exercise Does
Improve big-toe extension needed for efficient push-off during walking and running.
Why it matters: Supports toe mobility and may reduce compensations through the foot, ankle, knee and hip when the big toe cannot extend well.
Keep this gentle. Your goal is a smooth stretch through the big toe—not the biggest range you can force.
Set Up Your Board
Place the back foot on the Ankle Balance Board with the big toe on the raised forefoot section and the rest of the foot supported. Choose the Right Foot Setup or Left Foot Setup below for the foot you are training.

Starting Position
Stand in a tandem stance with one foot in front of the other. The working foot is the back foot.
How to Do It
- Shift your weight forward toward the front leg.
- Allow the back heel to rise while the big toe remains supported on the raised section.
- Move only as far as you can while keeping the motion controlled.
- Hold briefly, then shift back and lower the heel with control.
What You May Feel
A stretch through the big toe and the underside/front of the forefoot. The sensation should be a controlled stretch, not sharp pain.
Key Form Cues
- Keep the big toe in contact with the board.
- Move slowly; do not force the toe into range.
- Keep the foot pointing forward rather than rolling to the side.
Common Mistakes
- Lifting or twisting the big toe off the support.
- Forcing range with a sudden body movement.
- Turning the foot outward to avoid the stretch.
Start with 5–8 slow repetitions per side. Hold the end position for 2–3 seconds without forcing the range. Perform 1–2 sets. Increase toward 8–10 repetitions only if the movement remains comfortable and controlled.
Demonstration Video
Your board is ready. Watch the demonstration, then perform the exercise slowly and with control.
Ready for More Challenge?
Once you can perform this exercise with good control, you can increase the challenge by using the half-round balance balls.
Use the setup shown below for this exercise. Change only one element at a time. If you lose control, return to the Basic Board Setup.
